What changed in patch 1.0.4?

Patch 1.0.4 for How to Fish (Dazed Games, Steam App 4001890) released on August 22, 2026 — two days after launch. The confirmed changes:

  • 8-player lobbies. Online lobbies now support up to 8 players, up from the 1–4 player co-op advertised at launch.
  • Pufferfish nerfed. The Pufferfish boss was made easier.
  • Whale nerfed. The Whale boss was also made easier.
  • Black screen fixes. The patch addressed reported black screen issues — see our black screen fix page if you are still affected.

The official notes live on the Steam news page for App 4001890.

What does the lobby increase mean?

At launch, the store description listed 1–4 player co-op. Patch 1.0.4 doubles the ceiling to 8, which makes How to Fish one of the larger-lobby co-op fishing games on Steam. Exact lobby behavior beyond the player cap — matchmaking details, scaling, per-lobby rules — has not been officially detailed, so this page sticks to the confirmed number.

What do the boss nerfs mean for you?

Both confirmed bosses got easier. If you bounced off the Pufferfish or the Whale at launch, the post-1.0.4 fight is more forgiving. Because bosses gate island progression, the nerfs also smooth the path to new islands for everyone still on the early quest chain.
